About Cen2eco...

Cen2eco is an independent, non-profit nongovernmental organisation established in Geneva Switzerland in 2005. Cen2eco examines economic and ecological issues related to global development in order to identify options to overcome development barriers and pursue development opportunities. Special focus is given to exploring options for Switzerland to promote sustainable development at the national and international levels.

Independently, and in collaboration with other organisations, Cen2eco undertakes research and capacity building activities to assist governments in designing and implementing policies aimed at enhancing their economic and environmental performance.

An integrated approach...

The 2eco model underpinning Cen2eco's work:

seeks to ensure that an economy's long-term growth objectives are achieved by integrating both economic and ecological factors into development strategies. When environmentally sustainable growth is realised, and the social gains that it generates are shared by all economic agents, sustainable development can be achieved.

A global perspective...

The globalisation process has resulted in the integration of national economies into a single market for goods, services and capital. Integration has benefited some countries and communities, but disadvantaged others, largely based on differences in countries' economic capacities to compete in global markets and the extent to which they develop supportive national policy frameworks.

Designing and implementing national policies that provide economic agents with improved access to global markets and incentives to diversify production and enhance productivity are key in generating benefits. But international policies are important too, properly set, they provide a level playing field for international trade and ensure sufficient national policy space for governments to protect and support domestic economic activity, particularly those activities that generate significant social benefits and promote a balanced distribution of gains among varied income groups.

At the same time, with the increased scale and scope of modern economic growth, environmental challenges are mounting. Local economic activities now have regional and global environmental dimensions. And global economic and environmental governance systems progressively affect the local availability of economic opportunities and access to the natural and environmental resources needed to seize and sustain them.

Throughout the world, as populations grow, land areas with fragile ecosystems are increasingly developed and the intensity of adverse meteorological and hydrological  events rise as climate change intensifies. Development policy must respond to growing natural risks and threats through improved natural disaster adaptation and mitigation measures that provide increased resistance and resilience of human settlements and their economic structures.

These modern considerations demonstrate, that today, national and sub-national economies act within a complex global economic-ecological dynamic. To account for this, Cen2eco incorporates a global perspective in its 2eco model as a starting point for all of its work:

By internalising an assessment of global economic and ecological issues in its work, Cen2eco outputs aim to link local conditions and actions to global opportunities and constraints.
